How It Works
The IBW Publishing Process
Our Process
Once your manuscript is ready, here are the steps we use to publish your book:
1. Full Copy Edit
Our editors have been specially chosen to polish your work, adding gloss and shine, checking spelling and grammar, all while preserving the natural tone and style of your voice. Comments for your review are noted in track changes. Included in this stage is a full instructional email, video, and screenshot of the revisions summary pane, showing all the changes made. As well, we include a personalised voice message from our publishing manager, giving you a summary of the changes made, and drawing your attention to any specific items for review.
2. Your First Review
This is your first opportunity to make changes to the manuscript. You might accept, reject or modify the editor’s changes suggested in track changes. Although this is the first of 3 reviews you get on the manuscript, it is the final review for making substantive changes to the manuscript. Substantive changes basically means big changes, so if you’ve got any new material to add in, or any material to delete, do so now. If following the 6 week publishing schedule, we give you 5 days to complete this review.
3. Interior Formatting, Typesetting & Layout
Once you’re happy with the First Review, your manuscript gets sent to our formatting team for interior formatting, typesetting and layout. This is the stage where your book actually begins to look like a book, with book fonts, margins, headers, footers and title pages. The focus here is on creating a professional interior that best represents your message.
4. Your PDF Review
This is your second opportunity to make changes to the manuscript. At the PDF Review stage, we are seeking your feedback on the spacing, layout and visual display of the words and images in your book. Small changes to words here and there are permitted, but we ask that you keep big substantive changes to the First Review stage. If you have received a Foreword, or Testimonials for the front of the book, this is the final stage to add them into the book. Again, you receive a full instructional email, video and personalised voice message from our team, directing your focus so you can give us feedback. If following the 6 week schedule, we give you 2-5 days for this review, depending on how your book is progressing. Then, we make the changes you requested, and show to you for your approval.
5. Cover Design Concepts v1
While the editing and formatting is taking place, our cover design team is creating you a beautiful, eye-catching cover that makes your book go POP! In the pre-publishing stage, you will have completed our Cover Design Brief form, which asks you a stack of easy questions so our designers can get a sense of who you are, who your book is for, and what your book is about. It’s often best to give our designers some creative freedom to get the best result. Our designers our outstanding, and often nail your brief first time round. You will typically be presented with 1-2 cover designs, showing a mix of choices of fonts and colours. If following the 6 week schedule, we ask for your feedback on the covers within 2 days.
6. Cover Design Concept v2 & Finalisation
We incorporate your feedback from v1, and our design team produce the updated cover concept for you. This is your second of 2 opportunities for cover design changes, included in your package. Again, you will receive a full instructional email, video, and personalised voice message from our publishing manager, giving you guidance on what to focus on in your feedback. Typically, this round is about confirming a few final details, before we present you with the cover “For Your Approval”. Once we receive your approval, our design team go ahead and create approximately 8 versions of your cover, for ebook and paperback, across several publishing platforms. Included is a version of your cover with a #1 Amazon Best Seller in words or a badge, for use once your book goes #1.
7. Proof Copy Review
This is your 3rd and final opportunity to make changes to the manuscript. As your work goes through the process, you will notice that it changes form – from a word document in the First Review – to a PDF in the PDF Review – and finally into a physical paperback book. At every stage, the eye picks up different things. That’s why we do the Proof Copy Review stage, so if there is any final little changes (like maybe you forgot to thank Uncle Bob for his contribution to your life), we can get them all tidied up before you print 1000 copies and launch. If you have any changes to the manuscript, we incorporate them. Once we receive your final approval, our proceeds to create about 8 different versions of your manuscript, for ebook and paperback, across several different publishing platforms.
8. Distribution Upload and Passing Review Process
When the final files are ready, our team begin the upload process and ensure your book passes the relevant review processes that are unique to each platform. We make the necessary arrangements to have your ebook and paperback distributed on Amazon & iBooks and available globally to other retailers, libraries and educational institutions.
9. Amazon Page Listing Optimisation
There’s actually a lot of research and strategy that goes into getting your Amazon page listing optimized. We strategize on the best categories to list your book in, to give you the best chance of going to #1. On top of that, our marketing team have found a hack to get your book listed in up to 10 Amazon categories, giving you the opportunity to be seen in more than the regular 3 categories and the opportunity to go #1 in more categories. We optimise your book description and keywords for maximum search visibility, and we set up your Amazon Author Central account (eg your author profile on Amazon) to further enhance your credibility and visibility.
