Perfectionism is the dragon that has put many a book writing journey on indefinite pause. You need to face this dragon, and kick it to the curb! This blog will show you how.
Perfectionists are super critical if their work is not flawless. This shows up in writing a sentence, and then triple checking that sentence. Well, thing is guys, that is not going to work if you want your book published anytime before the year 3000!
What you need to realise is – for much of the book writing journey – your book is going to be far from perfect, in fact, it will probably be the opposite.
When you first start expressing your writing, it will probably be clunky and chunky. It might be really dry and logical, or perhaps overly fluffy. You might ram home the point, or not emphasise the point enough, or sometimes, you’ll even miss the point!
This is normal, natural, and part of the process.
Here’s 3 ideas to help you slay the perfectionism dragon:
- Dump It – Then Refine It
I teach our book writers to get to 65% complete as fast as possible. At 65% complete, what happens is the book becomes tangible, you can almost feel it, it becomes tangible and it becomes so much more real than just an idea in your head.
- You Don’t Need To Write It In Chronological Order
If you want to write chapter 7 first, then write chapter 3, then chapter 11 – go for it! As long as you have a solid structural framework in place (I can help you do this 1:1 in the Book Map Game Plan session), be free and write whatever is calling to you at that particular moment.
- There’s Perfection In The Imperfection
People want the REAL YOU, with all your quirks and unique traits. Be funny, be weird, be intense, be rough around the edges – own who you are and your unique voice and let that shine through the words.
Some of our most successful Inspirational Book Writers failed high school English, and wrote their books in simple language.
To kick-start your book, Dave has just a few spots this month to work 1:1 with you in the Book Map Game Plan Session. Click here to find out more and book your session.
